Summary:

On April 27, 2026, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Hamburg ruled in a case between Teleflex and Speed Care Mineral:

Teleflex had claimed that SpeedM® infringed one of their patents related to clay-based bleeding control. However, the court rejected this claim. More importantly, the court also found key parts of Teleflex’s patent to be invalid across several European countries, including Germany, France, and Italy. As a result, Teleflex’s infringement case against Speed Care Mineral was dismissed. This follows an earlier attempt by Teleflex to stop us through a preliminary injunction, which the court had already rejected in 2025.

Comparison of a New Halloysite Based Haemostatic Gauze (SpeedM) With a Kaolin Based Gauze (QuikClot Combat Gauze) in a Standardised Lethal Porcine Model of Uncontrolled Haemorrhage

The study investigates the effectiveness of a newly developed halloysite coated haemostatic gauze (haemostatic gauze (HG), SpeedM) compared with kaolin coated QuikClot Combat Gauze (CG) in a standardised lethal porcine model of arterial haemorrhage. The study aimed to evaluate halloysite’s potential as a novel haemostatic agent for traumatic bleeding treatment.

Physical Mechanism of Action

The adhesion and local concentration of platelets in the event of bleeding is accelerated due to the electrostatic attraction between the negative outer shell of the Halloysite Nanotubes (HNT) and the positive surface of the platelets. This is a physical effect.

The use of a high-pressure hydroentaglement process creates a homogeneous, interwoven textile surface structure with high tear resistance in the longitudinal direction. The hydrophilic perforated matrix structure of the gauze has interconnected pores and channels. This allows a large amount of water to be absorbed from the blood, leaving concentrated blood components at the bleeding site to promote hemostasis. In addition, the gauze optimizes pressure tranfer to the wound bed, thereby supporting mechanical hemostasis.
